I recommend you use the C64 emulator Frodo with this image. Here are brief instructions on how to load it. The zip file contains a list of game controls.

• Run "frodo.exe"
• Select Tools|Preferences and click the "Browse" button by the entry for disk drive 8 (which normally says "64prgs").
• Locate the ELITE.D64 file.
• Select "OK" and return to the emulator.
• In the emulator window type the following...
  LOAD"LOADER",8,1
  RUN
  Note that you must have Caps Lock clear for this and that " is given by SHIFT_2 even on US keyboards.
• When the Loader appears press F7 to switch turboload off and then select the option "ELITE"
• Save and load commanders as whole game "snapshots" (under "Tools").
  Or use Elite's save mechanism having enabled Frodo's 1541 emulation (under "Preferences").

   Apple II Elite was converted by Ian Bell from BBC Elite and published in 1986 by Firebird.

I recommend David Ellsworth's ApplePC emulator.
You may also be able to obtain an Apple II e rom image from this site.
Here are brief instructions on how to load it.

• Ensure ApplePC files; AppleII e system rom; and aplelite.dsk are in the same directory.
• Ensure Num_Lock and Caps_Lock are OFF.
• Type APPLE<return>
• Type d [disks] 1 [disk #1] aplelite.dsk <return> <esc>
• Set sound according to taste (eg. N3<esc> for soundblaster).
• <esc> to resume emulation.
• f10 Q quits to DOS when ready.

   Electron Elite was converted by Ian Bell and David Braben from BBC Elite and published in 1984 by Acornsoft.

A PC Electron emulator ElectrEm is now available.   Make sure you select NORMAL loading speed under Options. Electron ROM images may be obtainable here.
